Of Wicked Blood by Olivia Wildenstein & Katie Hayoz

Excerpt

NO REST FOR THE WICKED . . . OR THE CURSED.

SLATE
I didn’t mean to steal the Bloodstone from the De Morel’s crypt.
Scratch that, I did mean to steal it.
Until I realized it was a curse-magnet that only comes off if I, along with a jolly trio, successfully defeat four curses.
If any of us fail, I’m dead.
I’ve never been a glass half-empty sort of person, but my glass looks in dire need of a refill right about now.
The only highlight of this wicked treasure hunt: feisty, entitled Cadence de Morel.

CADENCE
I was raised on tales of magic, in a small town reputed to be the birthplace of French witchcraft.
Did I believe all the stories I heard? Absolutely not. I mean, if magic existed, Maman wouldn’t have died, and Papa wouldn’t be stuck in a wheelchair, right?
Wrong.
The night Slate Ardoin waltzes into my life, wearing a ring he stole from my mother’s grave, I call him a monster.
But then I meet real ones, and Slate, well . . . he becomes something else to me.
Something frustrating to live with but impossible to live without.
Something I will fight for, no matter the cost.

Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I read FEATHER by Olivia a while ago and loved it. So, when I saw that she had a new book releasing, I was eager to read it. I wasn’t disappointed.

OF WICKED BLOOD is the first book in the Quatrefoil Chronicles. This story has a unique take on elemental magic and a fascinating back-story, where the source of magic—existing in the elements Air, Water, Earth, and Fire—is traced to a golden Quatrefoil found in the forest of Brocéliande. In 1350, after humanity misuses magic, it is removed from the world and the leaves of the Quatrefoil are broken apart and hidden. Only the descendants of the original four guardian families can bring magic back by locating and reuniting the pieces. Descendants must face dangerous, possibly fatal, challenges brought forth by each elemental piece.

I liked that the story is told from the POV of the two main characters, Slate and Cadence. Slate’s character drew me in and cracked me up… I have a weakness for Han Solo-type characters—handsome, brash, confident, sarcastic. Plus, Slate throws around “Princess” just like my favorite “stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking…nerfherder.”

He unexpectedly finds himself at the center of the quest to reunite the Quatrefoil  after a rash act of revenge sets the challenges in motion and his life on the line. Enemies to lovers, slow-burn romance, possible love triangle, tons of sarcastic banter, magic and curses… What’s not to love?

This was such a quick and fun read… I was halfway through within a few hours, reading into the wee hours of the morning and having to force myself to close the book and go to sleep. Too soon, I found myself at the end and facing a cliff-hanger ending. I’ll be waiting [not so] patiently for the next book.
